George Floyd was arrested on 25th many for allegedly using counterfeit money to make a purchase. Police officers arrested him from the Minneapolis department. During his arrest, one of the police officers, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck for slightly over eight minutes while pleading for his life, claiming that he couldn’t breathe. Gorge Floyd’s death awakened worldwide protest condemning police brutality, systemic racism, lack of police accountability, and increased police militarization (Dreyer, 2020). This discourse discusses the impacts of Gorge Floyd’s murder.
Derek Chauvin, the officer involved in the death of Gorge Floyd, was dismissed from the Minneapolis police department following the death of Floyd. Moreover, the officers who were with Chauvin during the murder were also dismissed. This sparked a public uproar, which leads to weeks of protest and unrest. His death portrayed police violence and discrimination; the death of George Floyd illustrated the open discrimination and police brutality against Americans. As of 2018, there are approximately 1000 African Americans for every 100000 inmates compared to 200 white counterparts (Barrie, 2020).
Gorge Floyd’s death unmasked the increased high-profile incidents of systemic racism. The death of Floyd sparked a national protest to condemn increase police prejudice. Additionally, the death of Floyd illustrated the socio-economic divide whereby racial division whereby the African American. With the recent coronavirus outbreak, whereby the COVID-19 deaths were African Americans (Oriola, 2020). Due to inadequate health care. While the virus is nondiscriminatory, those in marginalized areas suffer the most since they do not have health insurance and live in abject poverty.
Furthermore, many people lost their jobs following the pandemic that left many people jobless and destitute. Gorge Floyd had lost his job following the pandemic, and being jobless might had been the reason that lured him into trying and counterfeit money to purchase the box of cigarettes. While Floyd was wrong, however, he did not deserve to die but face the proper justice for his offense.
Thirdly, another issue that raised immense controversy is the increased militarization of the police. Following the weeks of the death of George Floyd, the public claimed the misuse of military equipment by police, whereby the police officers used military equipment to disperse the groups that would otherwise not be used in such a case (Dave, 2020). The death has raised the question concerning police militarization and the department of defense’s role in managing the equipment. According to statistics from the defenses department, military equipment of approximately $5bn had been distributed to law enforcement officials as of 2015, increasing the number of military pieces of equipment in police officers’ possession. Thus, the surge in equipment explains the misuse of this equipment by law enforcement officers and contributes to increased police brutality and excessive use of lethal force even when unnecessary.
Therefore, the death of Floyd triggered global protest here. People condemned systemic racism, police brutality, and lack of police accountability. Therefore, this has led to a few reforms to restructure the police service to increase transparency. His death came as a plight to symbolize the black people’s struggles and the corrupt nature of the American criminal justice system. There have been numerous protests against police brutality and discrimination against blacks (Barrie, 2020). However, not much had been done to curb prejudicial killings as evidenced by blacks’ deaths in the hands of ruthless officers who are supposed to maintain law and order and protect the civilians.
