Reflection on “Culture”

Instructions
• Complete either Choice 1 or Choice 2.
• Write in full sentences and type your reflection.
• Formatting should follow Times New Roman, size 12 and ensure that your name and
student number are on the first page.
• Your reflection should be approximately 2 pages, double spaced.
• Remember that this is your opinion—you are not expected to use external sources.
However, if you do take information from another source, you must cite according to
MLA or APA.
Choice 1:
Share a story about a cross-cultural experience that happened to you. The story should be
about something that took place between you and an individual or group from another culture.
The experience can be funny, frightening, confusing, scary, awkward, heart-warming, or
whatever adjectives and feelings you associate with it. For example, you can describe an
incident that involved travel, meeting someone from another country and the ways in which
food, clothing, speaking and misunderstandings occurred. Please note that you are not
expected to write your Reflection the way that you would write a traditional essay. Write
your story FIRST, in a paragraph, or a few paragraphs, and then add the reflection, in another
paragraph or a few paragraphs.
• Describe the people involved, where you were, when it took place, and a detailed
account of what happened and how it made you (and others) feel.
• What were the particular activities that you participated in? What did you eat? What did
you wear?
• Do you feel that there was a “clash” or misunderstanding between two cultures? If so,
please explain why you feel this way. If not, what commonalities were shared between
these two cultures?
• What norms were similar and/or different between both cultures?
• How does this story connect to course concepts that we have discussed? Draw
connections between your experience and at least 2 specific concepts.
Potential concepts to include in your reflection (you may use other concepts):
multiculturalism, ethnocentrism, authenticity, popular culture.
OR
Choice 2:
Describe an important family holiday or celebration. Choose one day as an example that you
remember well. The experience can be funny, frightening, scary, awkward, heart-warming, or
whatever adjectives and feelings you associate with it.

For example, you can be describe a wedding that you attended, your best, worst, or funniest
Thanksgiving, Channukah, Christmas, Kwanza, etc. Please note that you are not expected to
write your Reflection the way that you would write a traditional essay. Write your story
FIRST, in a paragraph, or a few paragraphs, and then add the reflection, in another paragraph
or a few paragraphs.
• Describe the people involved, where you were, when it took place, and a detailed
account of what happened and how it made you feel (and others feel).
• How was the day celebrated? What were the particular activities that you participated
in? What did you eat? What did you wear?
• What set this day apart from the rest of the year? What made this day unique or
different from other times that it was potentially celebrated?
• What norms are often followed during this holiday or celebration? Did you and/or your
family members break any norms attached to this holiday or celebration?
• How does this story connect to course concepts that we have discussed? Draw
connections between your experience and at least 2 specific concepts.
