1.2 Communicate better, knowing that good communicators make better managers and that communication is a dynamic process basic to individuals and organizational life. Effective communication is essential for success in any role, but it is particularly important for managers because they are responsible for leading and coordinating the work of others. Good communicators are able to convey information clearly and accurately, listen actively and attentively, and adapt their communication style to the needs and preferences of their audience. They are also able to build rapport and establish trust with their team members and stakeholders, which is essential for creating a positive and productive work environment.
There are several key strategies that can help you communicate better as a manager:
Be clear and concise: Avoid using jargon or technical language that may not be familiar to your audience. Use simple, straightforward language and be sure to clearly state your main points.
Listen actively: Give your full attention to the person speaking and make an effort to understand their perspective. Ask questions and clarify any points that are unclear.
Use nonverbal communication: Your body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice can all impact the effectiveness of your communication. Be aware of these nonverbal cues and use them to reinforce your message.
Adapt to your audience: Consider the knowledge level, needs, and preferences of your audience when communicating. Tailor your message and delivery style to meet their needs.
Encourage feedback: Encourage open and honest communication by inviting feedback and asking for input from your team members. This will help you to identify any misunderstandings or issues and address them in a timely manner.
Remember, communication is a dynamic process that involves both the sender and the receiver. By being an effective communicator, you can build stronger relationships, foster a positive work culture, and improve the overall effectiveness of your team or organization.

Assess a Recent Difficult Conversation
Think about a recent difficult conversation you had. Ideally, select a conversation that occurred in the workplace or at school. Based on this conversation, do the following:
1. Summarize the conversation in one paragraph. (2 Marks)
2. Evaluate your and others’ performance in terms of assuming the best in one another, staying calm, finding common ground, disagreeing diplomatically, avoiding exaggeration and either/or approaches, and sharing all stories (including a shared story). (2 Marks)
3. Describe three ways you would approach the conversation differently if you did it over again. (2 Marks)
4. Assuming you had the conversation again, what are three questions you would ask to invite a learning stance? (2 Marks)
